Pupils from Gaelscoil Moshíológ were among students from across Leinster who visited a working dairy farm in Co. Wicklow this week as part of an educational initiative led by the National Dairy Council. The visit comes as new research from the NDC shows that more than half of children under 12 in Ireland have never seen a cow being milked. Students from the Gorey school took part in milking demonstrations, calf feeding and interactive workshops focused on nutrition, animal welfare and food production. The programme aims to help children better understand where their food comes from and how it reaches their tables. Teacher Siobhán Smith from Gaelscoil Moshíológ said the students were highly engaged throughout the visit and gained a clearer understanding of the journey “from farm to table”. The farm visits are part of the EU School Milk Scheme, delivered in Ireland through the NDC’s Moo Crew initiative.
