A project to remove Still Pond Weir on the River Urrin in County Wexford has received €296,180 under the National Barrier Mitigation Programme. The initiative, managed by Inland Fisheries Ireland, aims to restore fish passage and improve biodiversity in local rivers.
Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, highlighted the project as part of the Water Action Plan 2024 and praised the collaboration of stakeholders involved.
This funding is one of 91 projects nationwide aimed at enhancing river connectivity and supporting aquatic habitats. The programme contributes to environmental and climate objectives, allowing fish species to move freely through Ireland’s waterways.
A third round of funding will open in autumn 2026, offering further opportunities for projects to apply.
