A 20-year-old wheelchair user from Wexford has been left without essential mobility support, highlighting serious gaps in care for vulnerable adults. Simona Demyter, who has a rare genetic condition, has been without a properly fitted wheelchair, forcing her to spend up to 16 hours a day confined to a sofa.
Her mother, Kamila Demyter, co-founder of Wexford Rare Warriors, says the situation has had a major impact on Simona’s independence, dignity and overall wellbeing. The case has now been raised at national level, with local representatives bringing it to the attention of the Minister for Health.
In a late update, the family has been informed that a temporary wheelchair has arrived at their local Primary Care Centre, with delivery expected shortly. However, concerns remain over whether it will meet Simona’s needs, as they continue to wait for a long-term solution.
