REDUCED ROAMING COSTS ‘IN FINAL STAGE’ OF IMPLEMENTATION

Today marks the next stage in the effort to have everyone in the EU paying the same mobile phone charges.

People travelling to another member state from today will face reduced roaming costs of up to 19 cent a minute for a call, 6 cent for a text, or 20 cent per megabyte of downloads.

It is part of a 7 year process to phase out roaming costs altogether.

Consumer columnist with the Evening Herald Sinead Ryan says it Is worth remembering the new rules apply to EU member states only.

“This is the second last stage in that process – they’ll be scrapped altogether by December next year, that’s 2015” she said.

“Let’s just remember is it only EU countries; so for those of us going on our holiday to the likes of Turkey, Tunisia, Switzerland or anywhere outside the EU, the data roaming cuts don’t apply” she added.
