SPORT: GOAL SCORED IN WEXFORD COULD BECOME GOAL OF THE YEAR THIS EVENING

A goal scored in Wexford could become the Goal of the Year this evening.

The goal was scored at Ferrycarrig Park in a women’s league game between Peamount United and Wexford Youths in October 2013.

This evening it’s one of three shortlisted for FIFA’s Puskas Award, which is being held in Zurich.

Stephanie Roche scored the goal for Peamount but between the posts that day for Wexford Youths was Mary Rose Kelly.

Mary Rose was part of Wexford’s All Ireland winning junior football team last year and a GAA All Star.

She believes Stephanies goal was special and that she could take home the award.

The Ireland international faces competition from Robin Van Persie’s diving header in the World Cup against Spain, and James Rodriguez’s volley against Uruguay.

The ceremony starts at 5.30pm.
