Sport: Horses To Race Left In Historic Move At Wexford

SPORT: HORSES TO RACE LEFT IN HISTORIC MOVE AT WEXFORD

History will be made today at Wexford racecourse when for the first time racing will be reversed on the track.

Horses will race left in a new trial run being carried out at Bettyville.

The finishing stage of the race will now be ran slightly uphill as opposed to a downhill finish which was the norm since the track opened in 1951.

Davidstown trainer Paul Nolan, who has two horses running in this afternoon’s meet, said safety was a factor in the decision.

He said when you have a slightly downhill finish, like in Wexford, to try and put fences and hurdles finishing downhill when horses are getting tired and they’re going their fastest normaly you can have a lot more horses falling and possible fatalities.
