SPORT: WEXFORD’S BERTRAM ALLEN COMES 3RD AT THE WORLD CUP FINAL
Wexford’s Bertram Allen is being praised for his performance at the FEI World Cup Jumping finals overnight.
In his first ever World Cup Final, the 19 year-old finished third overall, in one of the tightest finishing scores ever seen in the famous competition.
He became only the fourth Irish rider in history to finish on the podium.
The competition was won by Swiss Olympic champion Steve Geurdat who had eight penalty points compared to Allen’s nine.
The runner up position went to Frenchwoman Penelope Leprevost who also had nine penalty points but was half a second faster on the clock than Bertram Allen.
Speaking after the competition, Irish show jumping manager Robert Splaine said it was a remarkable achievement in a world championship for a 19 year-old.
The Enniscorthy native’s third place finish on his mare Molly Malone will gain him valuable Olympic individual qualification points.
