Sport: Wexford’s Dean Walsh Fails To Secure Medal At European Games

SPORT: WEXFORD’S DEAN WALSH FAILS TO SECURE MEDAL AT EUROPEAN GAMES

Wexford light-welterweight Dean Walsh has been beaten in his quarter final at the European Games.

He was considered by all three judges to have lost his opening round against Kastriot Sopa of Germany, and then picked up a warning from referee Mykola Karakulov of Ukraine in the second.

That neutralised the winning of the round that otherwise had been awarded to the Irishman by all three judges, who each awarded the fight 29-27 to Sopa when Walsh couldn’t get back into the fight.

Meanwhile in better news, Ireland secured a second boxing medal in Baku earlier today.

Sean McComb won his quarter final against Turkey’s Yasin Yilmaz in the men’s lightweight division, with all three judges awarding the fight in the Belfast man’s favour.

This evening another Wexford man, Adam Nolan, has his chance to secure a welterweight bronze.

The London Olympian takes on Great Britain’s Josh Kelly.
