UK GENERAL ELECTION COUNTS UNDERWAY

It looks like the Conservatives will be the largest party at Westminster following the UK’s general election.

With results still coming in, an exit poll suggests the Tories will win 316 seats, just short of an overall majority.

David Cameron’s said he wants to form a ‘one-nation’ government in the coming days.

The Lib Dems have had a disastrous night with high-profile MPs like Vince Cable, Danny Alexander and Simon Hughes all losing their seats.

Leader Nick Clegg kept his in Sheffield Hallam one of just 10 the party’s expected to retain but says he’ll be discussing his position with colleagues later.

By contrast it’s been a sensational night for the SNP who’ve virtually wiped out Labour in Scotland, picking up 50 seats so far.

Labour itself hasn’t fared as well as opinion polls suggested on course for 239 seats.

That’s led to speculation about Ed Miliband’s leadership who’s admitted it’s been a ‘disappointing and difficult’ night.

Elsewhere, the Ulster Unionists have won the UK’s most marginal seat, in Fermanagh and South Tyrone, from Sinn Fein.
