WEATHER WARNINGS REMAIN AS NIGHT TEMPERATURES SET TO FALL
Drivers are being warned to take extra care as heavy snow is forecast for many counties in the north west.
A status orange snow and ice warning remains in place for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
Snow accumulations of between 4 and 8cms are forecast. Met Éireann says the highest amounts will be on high ground.
While a yellow warning is in place for Longford, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.
Between 2 to 4cms of snow are possible in those areas.
In general, it will be a cold day, with top afternoon temperatures of only 2 to 6 degrees – and frost lingering in sheltered areas.
While tonight will be cold and windy, with clear spells and scattered sleet and snow showers – but many areas will become dry.
Lowest air temperatures tonight will fall to zero or -1 in blustery northwesterly winds, with some icy patches.
As temperatures plummet, motorists are reminded not to pour boiling water on their car windscreen to remove frost and ice.
A simple solution to defrosting your windscreen is put forward by meteorologist Ken Weathers.
He says rather than using an ice scraper or a defroster, drivers should use a simple solution of alcohol and water for instant results.
“Here’s a better way – simple solution: all you do is spray, and the frost is gone” he said.
“Its not water – you don’t add hot water to a windshield, it can break it – but just the simple spray of solution on the windshield will make that de-icing a lot quicker” he added.
