4 WORK RELATED DEATHS IN CO. WEXFORD IN 2014

4 people were killed in work related accidents in County Wexford last year.

Figures released by the Health and Safety Authority today show nationally 55 people were killed at work in 2014, an increase of 17 per cent on the previous year.

Fatalities in the Agriculture sector increased by a massive 87 per cent last year, with 30 people killed compared to 16 in 2013.

It’s the fifth year in a row that the Agriculture sector recorded the highest number of fatalities.

Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority, Martin O’Halloran, says they are working with farming bodies to help reverse this trend.

“We have seen some progress but tragically this has not been reflected through the performance – and we will be working very closely with all of the farming bodies, government departments, Teagasc, the industry in 2015 on awareness raising, on promotion, on providing supports to farmers ” he said.

“But we will also be taking a firmer approach in relation to certain aspects of enforcement” he added.
